Want Gelato in SF? Visit Marco Polo

There’s a hole in the wall Italian gelato place called Marco Polo made by Cantonese people in Outer Richmond district of San Francisco.  First thought, how good could this possibly be?  The texture of the gelato is the closest thing I’ve had to gelato in Italy.  Even the gelato in North Beach doesn’t even come close.

The real kicker is Marco Polo has a lot of Asian flavors: mango, lychee, taro, sesame (worth trying once!!), honeydew, cantaloupe and even durian.  Marco Polo also have normal vanila, chocolate, strawberry, cappucino, my favorite arcobaleno (mix of flavors), and a few others. With a  small cup you can get 1-2 flavors, medium you can do 1-3, and large 1-4.  I’ve come back to this gelataria many times and they are consistent.  If you are looking for gelato, or even ice cream in San Francisco, try Marco Polo.

Review of Morton’s Steakhouse @SF’s Union Square

I recently went to Morton’s Steakhouse in San Francisco for a birthday dinner. The restaurant is located in the northwest region of San Francisco’s Union Square next to the now closed Disney store.

As soon as you walk in, you can see the large, open bar area. Since I made reservations in advance which I recommend, the wait was no longer than a few minutes so we decided against ordering a drink at the bar.

The place was packed, although the dining area didn’t seem too large. A lot of people seem to have been getting a steak and seafood for 2 combo for $99.  This deal is rather good, although our table of four decided against it.  After the waiter shows you all the different cuts of steak on a tray (the lobster was moving!), we all ordered own individual steaks, porterhouse and filets (they all around $50 a piece).  I tried to order a prime rib, but they ran out at 8:30pm.  Go to Morton’s earlier if you are looking for the prime rib.

Morton’s actual steak was OK.  The entire table had overcooked steak since we all ordered medium rare, and they all had a pink center.  No red, no blood.  There didn’t seem to be much flavoring, not even salt and pepper.  It didn’t seem to different than a steak I cook at home.

Overall, the decor, ambience, service, and wine list was great, but the food and price was adequate.  The only reason I would come back to Morton’s is to try their souffle.  They offer one of the largest souffles I have ever seen.  Every table seem to have gotten it, but we were too full after we got a free birthday chocolate cake.
